Radial shockwave therapy

What can shockwave therapy be used for?

Following assessment, radial shockwave may be considered for persistent tendon-related pain, particularly when an appropriate exercise programme and other initial care have not provided enough improvement.

Plantar heel pain

Pain under the heel associated with plantar fasciopathy, often described as plantar fasciitis.

Achilles tendinopathy

Persistent pain and reduced load tolerance involving the Achilles tendon.

Tennis or golfer’s elbow

Selected tendon-related pain around the outside or inside of the elbow.

Gluteal tendinopathy

Selected cases of persistent tendon-related pain around the outside of the hip.

Selected muscle problems

Some muscle-related pain and sensitive trigger points, where clinically appropriate.

Shockwave is one option within an individual rehabilitation plan, alongside exercise and activity advice. It is not suitable for every painful condition, and results vary.

What happens at your appointment?

  1. Assessment: we discuss your symptoms, health history and previous treatment, then check whether shockwave is suitable.
  2. Agreed treatment: we explain the options and risks, obtain your consent, apply contact gel and use the applicator over the selected area. Settings are adjusted to your comfort and clinical needs.
  3. Aftercare: we agree on exercises, activity advice and whether further sessions are appropriate. The appointment includes assessment and advice, not continuous application of shockwave.

Comfort, risks and suitability

The pulses may feel uncomfortable. Tell us if you need the intensity reduced or treatment stopped. Temporary soreness, redness, bruising or swelling can occur; rarely, tendon or fascia injury is possible.

Before booking, tell us about pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, a bleeding disorder, an implanted electronic device, cancer, infection, a recent steroid injection, fracture or tendon tear. Suitability is checked individually. Do not stop prescribed medicines without medical advice.

How to prepare

Wear clothing that allows access to the affected area and bring details of your medicines, previous treatment and relevant reports. You will receive individual aftercare advice; strenuous activity involving the treated area may need to be reduced temporarily.
